A Trip Back to the Old West

Last Spring, as many of you avid readers may recall, the Prairie Poet made a visit to a famous movie location in Southern Arizona called Mescal. dream of a man named Jay Gammons who, back in the 1970s, decided he wanted to live in an old western town. His dream started as 10 acres of dessert located 12 or so miles north of Benson, AZ. Over the years Jay, his wife, and some friends have created a town that consists of two saloons, a hotel, a fire station, a church, a blacksmith, a jail complete with hanging tree, and a casket maker's shop.  All of these buildings are built in the 1880s style so prevalent in the dessert southwest. Jay has turned his town into a tourist attraction and a location at which movies can be filmed.

Recently a soon to be released movie entitled The Gundown staring Peter Coyote, William Shockley, Sheree Wilson, and Andrew Walker was filmed in one of the saloons on the property. Pictured above is Jay Gammons sitting at a piano in the same saloon used in the film. If you click on the picture Jay will play a little ditty on the piano. Jay says he loves to sit at the piano in the evening, when the air is cool and no one is around, and play away for hours on end.
